Goal
Create a clear and user-friendly app interface that would not overwhelm users with too much information
Designing easy access to match date filtering options
Provide an intuitive visual representation of AI predictions for betting.
Challenge
Lack of Betting Industry Knowledge: It was crucial to study other competing betting platforms to understand this world, user journeys, and the systems and mechanics of these platforms.
Scope Expansion and Client Changes: The project scope grew beyond initial expectations, and the client often wanted to introduce changes that seemed minor from their perspective but could completely alter the user flow from the project's perspective.
Problems with External Data Provider: Issues with the external data provider required us to redesign part of the betting cart.
Process overview
We started with client workshops to grasp project goals and establish a shared vision, outlining the product scope and delivery plan. Our research refined the MVP scope, identifying key challenges and providing insights into the world of sports betting through competitor analysis. The next step involved creating user flows and wireframes for initial testing. Due to a tight deadline, design and development phases ran almost simultaneously to meet the MVP launch deadline.
User Flows
Mapping out the user flow was crucial for understanding the application's structure and early detection of potential difficulties.
Wireframes
Wireframes and simple prototypes helped us with visual understanding of the application in the early stages and validate our hypotheses.
Main screen
The main dashboard features a match list with quick access to bets and statistics. The bottom navigation allows for swift filtering by date and leagues, while during betting, users have fast access to their bets - showing their stake and potential winnings.
Access to key statistics
Place a bet
The betting cart is the essence of betting and one of the most crucial views. To deliver the best experience, I paid special attention to:
Easy filtration by bet types.
Historical bets are displayed in a simplified form to reduce cognitive load.
Each bet includes information with a percentage prediction for the bet outcome.
A toolbar displaying information about current bets enables constant monitoring of bets.
Track favorites leagues
The user can create a list of leagues they want to follow and have quick access to it, without the need to search through all available leagues in the app. This personalized feature enhances the user experience by allowing them to tailor their dashboard to their specific interests and preferences.
Consistent UI elements are key to a great user experience. I've created reusable components for SportXpert so they could easily tweak, optimize and scale in the future, on their own terms.
Project retrospective with upcoming plot twists...
Things got off to an excellent start!
But, it wasn't the ending we hoped for…
Unfortunately, SportXpert faced issues with the prediction engine - it didn't meet expectations and results placed on it. As it was a crucial component, further work on the product was stopped.
Yet, I still learned a lot!
1. Simplicity is also about improving the complexity of information, not only reducing it.
SportXpert has a lot of information, and reducing it's not always possible. If taking an extra step makes the user experience clearer and more intuitive, then it's worth the effort.
2. Good communication with developers is an opportunity to discover new solutions.
Understanding their perspective helped uncover new opportunities and led to quicker and better design solutions. (Additionally, boost team communication)
